Music is made up of specific sounds, such as those produced by the keys on a piano keyboard. Each key has its own unique sound — higher or lower than the sounds produced by the other keys — and it always produces the same sound. Different types of instruments produce sounds in different ways, but through the keyboard we can more easily understand how notes are arranged and named. This is because the keys on a keyboard are arranged from low to high, with the lowest-pitched key at the far left of the keyboard and the highest-pitched key at the far right. We name these notes using the first seven letters of the alphabet: A, B, C, D, E, F and G. All keyboards are made up of a mixture of black keys and white keys. Each black key is placed between two white keys, forming groups of two or three.
